Focusing on Safety

I have shared a couple of posts about art room safety recently (#1 and #2) but I was reminded of something really notable yesterday. We haven’t needed to focus on safety in over 10 years!

We were having our art in-service — a little professional development as we prepare to welcome students for the new school year — and as I talked in our general session to an audience of around 350 art teachers (I know, right?!), I realized what an accomplishment this is.

I don’t know about your school system, but for all of the great work happening in ours, we are sometimes more REactive than PROactive. That is the case now, with safety — not because there was an art room accident, but a science room accident in the past year. This led to some safety reviews and some extra attention paid to those disciplines that involve safety risk (which we certainly do).

So kudos to all of you who have helped ensure your students’ safety for these many years! Let’s keep it up.
